Direct Line ,one of the major UK insurers(and part of Royal Bank of Scotland) has launched an ad campaign smearing all comparison sites with the title "middlemen"(details here). As a matter of fact none of its subsidiaries (such as Churchil and Privillege) are included in any comparison site, claiming the revenue of comparison sites is generated by hidden commission.
However the truth is comparison sites charge the advertised companies a flat rate when a customer clicks on a link displayed on the comparator, or actually buys a product from the advartised company more details here.(akin to the Google's AdSense technology).Or in other words its as if the owners of a shopping centre charge a shop when a customer walks in that particular shop.So ...does anybody see the middleman role here and if so do you think this process is unfair since the end product bears the same pricetag?
